I’m an ophthalmologist, with a particular passion for cataract surgery. I love what I do because of the immediate gratification: people may come in one day, unable to see, and then within a day or two of their surgery, they can see again, and they love you for it! It’s really very rewarding. I also like the hospital where I work (St. Mary’s) because it is very multicultural. If I look at my list of patients today, I must have had at least eight or nine different cultures represented, many coming in with their kids to translate for them. They all tell me that they pray for me, so I think I’m covered in every religion! It’s nice to see them all talking to each other in the waiting room and comparing stories about how their surgeries went. Everyone is getting along: the Jews, the Russians, the Arabs, the Chinese, etc… It’s like a microcosm of the world at large and you wish the macrocosm could be like that. If they can all get along in this little room, why can’t we all get along in the world?
