“This congregation is the oldest one in Canada—in fact, it predates Canada. The congregation was formed in 1768, while Canada is only 1867. They say that this was the third corporation in Canada: the first was the Hudson’s Bay Company, the second was the Gazette and this was the third one. This was the only synagogue in Canada for a long time… until the 19th century. Now, there are over sixty synagogues in Montreal.”
“What’s it like to be a part of history?”
“There’s a lot of history in this place… so it’s quite humbling. I continue to have big shoes to fill, even though I’ve been the rabbi here for eight years.”
