“My daughter just turned 6 years old; she was diagnosed with a hereditary neurological disease called Familial Dysautonomia*, a disease specific to Ashkenazi Jews, which affects her ability to regulate her body’s systems. We manage with the help of a very broad community who support us, including healthcare professionals, friends and Federation – it really does take a village. We’ve benefited from programs like day camp where you have a special needs director and shadows on hand, and we’ve also taken part in library programs and a parlour group… it’s important to be part of a community that is accepting of her needs.”
