Workers at the shtreimel factory in Montreal provide shtreimels for Hasidim all over the world. Quality, density and fur-type distinguish different shtreimel types, and each can cost from one to several thousand dollars. Worn on Shabbat and holidays, they were originally conceived by anti-Semitic governments to isolate Jews, but Jews took the fur tails they were forced to wear and wove them into a round, crown-shaped hat, adding to their dignity on Shabbat as kings.
