“I’m a social worker. I worked at the Cummings Centre for almost three years, mainly with Holocaust survivors. I love my job and I decided to do my Master’s in social work so I’m back in school and now I’m currently a social worker in the emergency at the Jewish General Hospital. I grew to love working with older adults when I worked at the Cummings Centre. The best part, really, was working in the community and giving back to the community. It was so special for me because when I was younger, I went to summer camp and at a certain point, my parents got divorced and couldn’t afford to send me anymore, and so the community sent me to camp. It meant a lot for me. I think it makes your job that much more special when the community has given to you, and then you’re able to give back.
My biggest realization throughout my time working with Holocaust survivors at the Cummings Centre was that I was there to listen to their stories. That’s the best part of working with Holocaust survivors: they create a relationship with you where they feel comfortable enough to share their very personal story. It’s also amazing to see how resilient they are; to see what they’ve gone through and that they came to Canada and built a life and a family. It gives you a lot of strength to see them. It teaches you the quality of life, what life is, and how money is not as important as important as health and happiness.”
