“I’m not religiously observant. I identify as a Jew mostly through a sense of community – a sense of bonding with other people of the same roots. Being at the Maccabiah games (the largest non-religious Jewish event in the world) made me recognize how much I have in common with Jewish people from all over the world. To me, that’s how I felt the most Jewish; when I was walking into the opening stadium, attending the closing ceremonies, having dinner and bonding with athletes from Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. I felt profoundly Canadian, and profoundly Jewish. It’s an experience that I brought back here and I believe that bringing Jewish youth together through sport is equally as important as bringing people together for religious reasons.”
