“I was eight years old, hiding with my mother so we wouldn’t be deported from Budapest or sent to the ghetto. At one point we were hiding in a church, and we had to pretend we weren’t Jewish and attend midnight mass. Since I was raised with a religious background, I didn’t want to kneel before the altar. My mother pushed me down and I stood up, then she pushed me down again! She knew we had to do whatever we needed to, in order to survive.”
