“At the Academy we emphasize a lot of positive living skills through sports psychology. The kids mostly play tennis, soccer, and other field games. Every other week there’s a different mental skills theme such as focus, motivation attitude, self-talk, and mental imagery. We improve their mental skills off the court so they can get better on the court.
Over the years, what I’ve noticed is that it’s difficult to touch the value of sports psychology. You can buy a CD, you can buy a car… but how much would you pay for feeling good about yourself? I think all these things are transferable skills not only in sports, but in life. When you’re up against challenges, it’s the ability to rebound back and be persistent. I remember when I applied for my Master’s degree I got rejected eighteen times. I got in on my nineteenth time and without persistence I wouldn’t have done all this. The more times you fail, the more times you’re successful. If you have that mind frame, you’ll be able to do much more in life.”
