“I work with special needs kids using music therapy. I’m actually a singer, but I was always the kind of person that special needs kids were drawn to, and I seemed to connect with them. Music is — sadly — a very unknown form of therapy for any kid. There are a lot of studies about how music can change how you feel. Especially with kids who have special needs; memory and confidence is a huge problem. So just getting them to learn the words and teaching them to stand in front of people to sing, builds confidence and makes them realize that they can do normal things too. I have one kid who literally sings her way through life now. In terms of schooling, I’m hoping to develop music therapy as a certified way of approaching, or at least introducing, kids to therapy.”
“What’s the most rewarding aspect of helping special needs children through music therapy?”
“It used to be that there was no feeling like standing on stage and singing, but now I find there’s no feeling in the entire world like seeing a kid who thinks nothing of themself smile, be happy, or laugh.”
