“There are people in our community who have nothing. Some have had to leave their home country and come to Montreal to try to make a life for themselves. Others are seniors, some widows, and they are very poor. We need to help them. For the past 19 years I’ve been a volunteer, helping people get access to food baskets.
Not only do these baskets help individuals in the Jewish community keep a kosher home and put food, like chicken and eggs, on the table, but they help build a sense of community when the recipients get to know each other. Many times, one person will pick up a basket for a neighbour who can’t walk anymore, or an older relative. We help them with food and they help each other build a life. I may only be 4’8”, but when I help someone who really needs it, I feel like I’m 6 feet tall!”
With the help of Federation CJA, 14,200 people benefited last year from kosher cafeterias, food banks, and the delivery of food baskets and vouchers.
